Current Research

Dr. Lamm has significantly advanced the care of genitourinary cancer patients through his research. Though he is no longer a full time University Professor, his commitment to advancing urologic oncology through research has not diminished.

Phase I-IIa Clinical Trial of Chemophase and Chemotherapy in Superficial Bladder Cancer

This research study, sponsored by Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. is a Phase I-IIa, multiple dose, safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic study evaluating Chemophase and chemotherapy (mitomycin) for patients with superficial bladder cancer.

Chemophase (human recombinant hyaluronidase) is an investigational drug that is being studied to determine its safety and effectiveness in reducing recurrence of tumors if administered intravesically with chemotherapy into the bladder.

Clinical Trial Updates

Dr. Donald Lamm, President of BCG Oncology, PC, is pleased to announce the opening of 2 studies we hope will improve the treatment of bladder cancer.

More Studies

A Multicenter Trial of Induction and 6 Courses of 3 Week Maintenance with BCG plus Interferon Alfa-2B in Superficial Bladder Cancer
Donald L. Lamm, M.D. and Michael O'Donnell, M.D., Principle Investigators

This randomized clinical trial has enrolled 670 patients around the country. The goal is to compare the best current treatment for superficial bladder cancer -- maintenance BCG, the maintenance BCG plus interferon. Patients are also randomized (like a coin flip) to receive multiple vitamins in the recommended daily allowance versus that plus high doses of vitamins A, B6, C, D, E, folic acid and zinc (Oncovite, Mission Pharmacal). These vitamins have all been reported to prevent or reduce cancer growth, and Dr. Lamm's previous double-blind randomized trial showed that Oncovite reduced tumor recurrence by 40% in BCG treated patients.

Parallel, randomized, Double-Blind, placebo Controlled Phase II adjuvant Studies of erlotinib and polyphenon e to prevent the recurrence and progression of Tobacco-Related, high-grade superficial Bladder cancer

This randomized clinical trial compares standard treatment with Green Tea extract and a new cancer treatment drug, Tarceva, that inhibits growth hormone. The study will be available in California at UCLA and in Arizona at BCG Oncology.

BCG Oncology has been approved as the Arizona site for this study, and the study is being reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Scottsdale Healthcare...Continue

Phase One Studies Under Development

Dr. Lamm is working with several companies to improve the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. Our goal is to develop improved, less toxic immunotherapy, better ways to deliver chemotherapy, and to explore new treatments such as gene therapy. Regulations require that we have specific approval before we "advertise" these, but keep checking, better treatments are on the horizon.

A Phase 1 Dose-Escalation Trial of Intravesical CG0070 for Superficial Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder After Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Failure

This study is sponsored by Cell Genesys and uses a common cold virus (Adenovirus) that is genetically modified to specifically target bladder cancer cells and kill them. BCG Oncology has been approved as the Arizona site for this study, which is approved by the Ethical Review Committee, a national IRB.

A Pilot Study Using Apatone For The Study Of Prostate Cancer That Failed Standard Therapy IND 69,304

This novel dual molecule appears to selectively kill a number of different types of cancer cells by a process called autoschisis. Cells that are killed by Apatone include prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer. Normal cells appear to be unaffected and the drug seems to be remarkably free of side effects. Dr. Lamm is a member of the scientific advisory committee of IC-MedTech, the company that is developing the drug. Approval for the use of apatone must await FDA and IRB acceptance which is anticipated in April.
