Symptoms of GU Cancer

It is important to realize that many cancers do not cause symptoms and therefore regular medical examinations and screening tests must be done if these cancers are to be caught early, when cure is expected...more symptoms

Screening Tests

The routine history and physical is a screen for many important diseases, including cancer. For urologic cancers, symptoms that can relate to cancer include general or constitutional symptoms such as fever (Kidney cancer or renal cell carcinoma, RCC), weight loss (RCC, bladder cancer, (BT), prostate cancer (CAP), testis cancer (TT), weakness (all), loss of energy (all), night sweats (RCC), fatique (all), headache (RCC).

Since cancer can spread to any part of the body symptoms referable to any organ may occur, and a "lump" or mass may be felt anywhere. Testis cancer can cause breast swelling in men due to hormones produced by the tumor. Abdominal swelling is infrequent, but can be seen with renal, testis and bladder cancer. Swelling of the "glands" or lymph nodes can be seen, primarily the nodes above the collar bone in testis cancer and the nodes in the groin in cancer of the penis. Renal cancer can spread virtually anywhere, and is the most common cancer to cause a solitary (single) bone metastasis (spread), as well as the most common cancer to spread to another cancer.

The most likely place for a patient to find a malignant genitourinary tumor is in the testis. Self examination of the testis (like breast self examination, in my opinion) is worthwhile.
