Symptoms By Cancer Type

Bladder Cancer

Blood in the urine is the most frequent symptom/finding in patients with bladder cancer. The bleeding can be visible or "gross" or microscopic, detectable only with microscopic inspection or analysis. Bladder cancer can also cause symptoms similar to bladder infection, with urinary frequency and burning. Very infrequently a suprapubic swelling or mass may occur. Ureters can become obstructed or metastasis occur, resulting in weakness, loss of weight, or fluid retention.

Prostate Cancer

Most men with prostate cancer have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur they typically are the same as men with benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH): increased frequency, decreased force of stream, nocturia, and incomplete emptying of the bladder. Prostate cancer spreads first to lymph nodes in the pelvis and bone, which can result in ankle/lower limb swelling (edema) and bone pain, respectively.

Kidney Cancer

Currently kidney cancer is most frequently picked up on imaging studies (CAT scan, MRI, or ulrasound) done for "other reasons." The symptoms of kidney cancer are highly variable and include fever, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, weakness, loss of energy, night sweats, fatique, headache, weight loss etc. The "classic triad" of symptoms: hematuria (blood in the urine), flank pain and abdominal mass are very uncommon now.

Testis Cancer

Most patients with testis cacncer notice a lump within the testis. Sometimes pain in the testis is the initial symptom, and this pain is sometimes attributed to an injury. If pain is more than would be expected from the injury careful examination should be made for a mass within the testis. Testis cancers can grow very rapidly and can spread to the abdomen or lungs, causing abdominal swelling or pain and even shortness of breath. Lymph nodes above the collar bone on the left can be enlarged and breasts may enlarge and be painful.

Penile Cancer

Cancer of the penis occurs almost exclusively in men that have not been circumcised. It begins as a small "lesion" or lump on the skin of the penis that increases in size and may bleed. These tumors commonly become infected and lymph nodes in the groin are commonly enlarged.

Urethral Cancer

Cancer of the urethra is uncommon. By narrowing the channel this tumor can cause the symptoms of reduced force of urinary stream, like prostatic enlargement. Urethral cancer may be associated with a stricture or narrowing of the urethra, so biopsy of urethral strictures is frequently indicated. The most common symptom is a bloody urethral discharge. A mass or lump in the urethra may be felt.
